Sam Bruckner’s Plugging In

Local busker, runner, fencer, sailor, and balloon animal-artist Sam Bruckner has organized a concert, The Breakup Bash, featuring five great emerging artists from around MetroWest. The show’s a benefit for Plugged In, and takes place on Friday March 3rd. In advance of the show, we asked the Trouble Made frontman a few Qs.

atac: Who are you?

Sam Bruckner: Hey there! My name is Sam Bruckner. I’m a singer-songwriter in MetroWest, MA.

atac: We’ve been seeing you around the Centre Music House open mics lately; how’d you get started?

SB: I’m originally from Boston. I played violin for a couple years but I absolutely hated it. Then going into high school in Needham I had a teacher, Mr. Lee-Clark, who was instrumental in sparking my love of guitar; that rekindled my love of songwriting. I also want to shout-out Plugged In, the organization we are raising money for with this event. They got me my first gigs and their goal is to help every student get an education in music no matter their race, gender identity, sexual orientation, or income. They truly make the world a better place to be!

atac: You’ve given this evening of live bands a title, The Breakup Bash. What’s that all about

SB: The Breakup Bash started off as a bit of a joke I made to my friends. “The best way to get over a breakup,” I told them, “is to throw The Breakup Bash!” In other words…the perfect show—a night you’ll never be able to forget! The name stuck, and I thought it would be awesome to make that a reality!

atac: Have you seen other shows that bring similar energy; any unforgettable nights?

SB: I saw AJR live and it was astonishing how good of a show they put on. It was like a film, magic trick, and concert all at the same time! The show and music really hit me that night; it felt super relatable.

atac: Let’s pretend your car is…a midnight-black 1999 Honda Odyssey with a 4-disc CD player in there. What are you bringing on a road trip?

atac: You got any friends or local acts you’d like to give a shout-out to here?

SB: I think every handpicked artist who you are seeing on The Breakup Bash lineup is excellent. We’ve got 13 Seconds, Daisy, Weird Autumn, Pretty Rotten, and of course Trouble Made.

atac: Any cool MetroWest resources for bands; places other young acts should know about?

SB: The Needham Music Store, in, you couldn’t guess it…Needham. This place is spectacular! I love poking around the shop; I swear the nicest people you will ever meet work there.

atac: You’re a very positive guy, Sam. Got any words of wisdom at the end here?

SB: Just get out there and make sure that you take every single opportunity you get, and meet every single person you can. You never know when you’re going to get your big break. Also, find your people! I remember one of my first ever gigs—I was too nervous, and at the time I didn’t have my band Trouble Made behind me. Without the guys my confidence dwindled; I couldn’t imagine doing it without them now.
